  • One tank hook-up offers slightly less space and installment cost

In some areas soil conditions may require the installation of a three tank system. (In ground pressure or mound systems) The last tank is the pump chamber.

    Household Tips
that increase the service life of your septic system

How often should the septic tank be pumped?
Every 1-3 years, when sludge in the tank is approaching the 1/3 full mark.

How does the use of household water affect the system?
Conserve water. The more water used, the water must be disposed in the drain field. When purchasing appliances...look for the water conserving features.

What are some of the common household habits that create problems in the septic tank.
Avoid using the drains as a disposal. Grease is the worst thing in the system. Coffee grounds, cooking fats, filter cigarette butts, disposalble diapers, paper toweling, tissues...should not enter the system.

Can a garbage disposal be used?
Garbage disposals are not recommended, food particles tend to clog up the system. If a disposal is used...it is recommended that you pump the system twice as often or increase your tank size by one third.

What about the use of household cleaning products?
A moderate use of bleaches, cleansers and other household products will not harm the action of the system.

Is a special type of toilet paper required?
Yes...select white paper especially recommend for septic tank use. There are no dyes to break down in white paper.

  • Absolutely never go into the septic tank
Lethal gases build up in the tank that are deadly. Call professionals if you have a problem.

Understand your septic system better by knowing the terminology.

(1)Septic Tank-An underground tank for temporary storage and treatment of household wastes.
(2)Sludge-Decomposed material that settles to the bottom of the tank and requires removal every 1-3 years.
(3)Liquid in the tank-The liquid portion of household waste temporarily in the tank until it moves to the drainfield.
(4)Scum-That material floatinf on top in the septic tank and usually composed of greases and soaps.
(5)Distribution box-This structure distributes effluent equally to the several laterals in the drainfield.
(6)Effluent-The liquid leaving the septic tank and entering the drainfield.
(7)Drainfield-An underground system of piping that disperses effluent into an absorbent soil.
Anaerobic bacteria-This is the bacterial activity occuring in the septic tank which breaks down houshold waste into sludge.(Anaerobic bacteria function in a non-oxygen environment.)
Aerobic bacteria-Function and provide decomposition and purification in the drain field (Aerobic bacteria require oxygen to function.)
